| Description |
English: Wandle Park With origins dating back nearly 500 years, this park, close to the centre of Croydon was opened in 1890. The River Wandle flowed into an ornamental lake near the centre of the park, and photographs from the period show that boating on the lake was a popular pastime.
Sadly, due to the drop in the water table, maintaining the lake was difficult, and the river was routed via a culvert in 1967. The lake was filled in and grassed over. Recently, money has been made available to renovate Wandle Park, and there is the possibility that the lake may re-appear at some stage in the future. |
