Stone fragment - Celtic ringed cross head
Description
Cross-slab fragment of pink sandstone carved in relief one side, early 9th century. Equal-armed ringed arm pit cross set in slightly tapering base which meets a moulding that gently curves up towards edge moulding. Cross has semi-circumlar hollow 'arm-pits'. Edge moulding expands into pair of spirals at point where it passes surviving transverse arm. Ring carved in shallower relief than cross. Slab is dressed to be slightly convex, highest point being centre of cross-head. Groove on reverse (otherwise undressed) ? part of composite monument.. Found during mechanical excavation in 1990 to lower drainage pipes for Rosemarkie Church by Mr. D. Graham, Contractor, E. Marshall and G. Watson.
