Summary
DescriptionSquare off Main Street, Hawkshead - geograph.org.uk - 168890.jpg
English: Square off Main Street, Hawkshead. On the right is the Co-op shop, which has a slate datestone inscribed: "WWD/1732". Ahead, across Main Street, is an interesting and attractively painted building that is a former Solicitor's office and now the National Trust shop, having been given to the Trust by Beatrix Potter. It is probably of the 17C but re-fronted in the 19C, including the Venetian window on the first floor. The passage leads to Red Lion Yard. To the left of it is the Red Lion Hotel, also possibly of the 17C but refaced in the 19C. The 'eyebrows' over the windows are called label moulds. There are two carved corbels under the eaves, one in form of a man with pig, the other a man with bagpipes.
