Summary

Description
English: Craigievar Castle, Scotland. Drawing of 1668 heraldic plasterwork on the staircase. The arms should be those of Forbes, owners of the Castle, completed in 1626 by the Aberdonian merchant William Forbes. The initials "I F" on either side of the shield. However the arms are incorrectly depicted, here showing three wolf's heads erased, as alluded to by the motto "Doe Not Vaken Sleiping Dogs". The correct arms of Forbes are Azure, three bear's heads couped argent muzzled gules (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, pp.365-6). Here no muzzles appear, teeth show which is incorrect for bears, and the necks are erased not couped.
