Description
English: Carved wooden ceiling boss from Linlithgow Palace, circa 1617. The carved and painted decoration shows Scotland's heraldic unicorn (now acephalous) holding James VI's new Union flag (with unusual saltire azure on field argent rather than the standard saltire argent on field azure) on a lance, collared with a coronet and wrapped in a golden chain. In heraldic terms: a unicorn argent armed, crined and unguled proper, wikt:gorged with a coronet or composed of crosses patée and fleurs de lys a chain affixed thereto passing between the forelegs and reflexed over the back also or, supporting a tilting lance proper flying a Union banner.
