English: Herbaceous Border at Easton Lodge, Essex, England, by Annie Louisa Pressland, alternatively her preferred 'Miss Pressland', printed by J Salmon. Miss Pressland (1862-1933), a Wandsworth-born painter, studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, and exhibited at the Society of Women Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the London Salon, and galleries in Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester. A theme of her work was private gardens, she producing a series of of ten paintings of Easton Lodge under a commission from Countess of Warwick. She designed posters for the Underground Group in 1913, which are held in the collection of the London Transport Museum. Easton Lodge was built by Henry Maynard in 1597. This later-built house, with gardens designed by Harold Peto, was occupied by 'champagne socialist' and socialite Frances Evelyn Maynard (1861-1938), Countess of Warwick, who was born at Easton Lodge and lived there her whole life. |
